Special Guild Events
Each year the Guild tries to organize at least one special event or workshop. These events typically involve a group of quilters gathering together for a day to learn a new skill or to provide some community service.

2008: Batik Strip Exchange - August, 2008

At the August meeting, the guild voted to have an exchange of batik strips. Here are the rules that we all agreed to:

Some members planned to work independently and make quilts of their own choice and/or design. Others plan to work together to increase their variety. We may schedule a workshop after the October meeting.

2006: The year 2006 was special because the Quilts of Gee's Bend were on display at the High Museum of Art. To help support this exhibit, local quilting guilds were asked to help educate the public on the art of quilting by showing sample quilts and demonstrating various quilting techniques. These sessions were held on Saturday in the classrooms at the High. A number of Phoenix Guild members participated in this event demonstrating skills ranging from machine piecing, hand and machine applique, bias binding and hand quilting. The public was both enthusiastic and interested in the quilting process. Also, the Guild participants were able to tour the Gee's Bend Exhibit.

2005: The public service event for 2005 was to assist in the quilting exhibit which was part of the Black Arts Festival in Atlanta. Belinda (Brown Sugar Guild) and Cinty (Phoenix) demonstrated various quilting techniques at the Woodruff Art Center.

Also during 2005, Regina Carter conducted a Celtic quilting workshop at the Emory University Student Activity Center. All attendess successfully produced a small Celtic knot quilt and had a lot of fun in the process thanks to the positive and patient teaching of Regina.

2004: In May, Eileen Sullivan conducted a workshop demonstrating Flip-and-Sew Foundation Piecing at the Emory University Student Activity. The project was to paper piece a small Iris quilt. The pattern was provded as part of the workshop fee and included diagrams at three levels of difficulty. Guild members were expected to bring their own sewing machine and to complete the Iris quilt as part of the class. At the end of the workshop, Eileen had a trunk show of her completed paper-pieced works of art.

Quilting Challenges
Each year the Guild proposes a challenge to test the quilting skills, creativity and ingenuity of the members.

Current Challenge (2006): The current challenge involves swapping many squares of different colors and constructing a quilt which utilizes all of the squares. Optionally, two half yards of another fabric may be added. Except for the backing, no other fabric may be used. This challenge includes not only the Phoenix Guild but also the Intown Guild and the Brown Sugar Quilters. The challenge quilts will be judged in the fall.

Prior Challenges: The most recent prior challenges involved swapping squares of batik fabric and constructing a quilt using either the "Stack and Whack" technique or some other technique of the quilter's choice.
